Stress relief ideas?
I would recommend meditating for a good 10 minutes during your break. I have used this strategy at my own hospital and afterwards, I feel relaxed and ready for round 2. If its nice outside, I will usually try doing this outside next to nature and I have even found myself in a storage closet just to get away from the noise lol.
I have also communicated with friends to get my mind off the stress. Focusing on having a good laugh here and there makes it more manageable. Utilizing your support networks is something we all need to do more. Have you tried any of this?
It sounds weird but I feel that chewing gum really helps me focus. I tend to pop a piece in when I’m about to head to a procedure or respond to a rapid/code and seem to have conditioned myself. Also I understand that deep breathing isn’t for everyone, but sometimes finding a quiet place -even a dirty linen closet- where you aren’t stimulated can be great for a quick second to unwind.
Don’t be afraid to take a few minutes to yourself for a quick drink, bite to eat, or bathroom break. Unless someone is literally dying your next move can wait and you will be better off for it. I think it is easy to forget how over-caffeinated we are and how much dehydration and hunger affects our emotional state and responses to our environment.# 11 months, 4 weeks ago
I agree, meditation and deep breathing also help me. I like the gum idea as well. Sometimes I put some essential oil I mix with water in my mask (not too much or you will get headache and not directly near where your nose hits – like off to the side near outer edge of mask) . There’s different formulas like special stress relief blends, lavender etc. I also find doing guided meditations at night (you can YouTube Guided meditations) helps me feel less stressed overall and better able to deal with stress during my shifts. Exercise is also a big thing for me, when I don’t do some type of physical activity I am more stressed and overwhelmed on a daily basis. Good luck and stay strong 🙏🏻💪🏻# 11 months, 3 weeks ago
@skipper0514 I love gardening, I have been doing it for years. I find that it really helps me feel like I am being productive and giving back to the planet. Tho that might sound weird I really advocate more nurses to try it.
@FeralRN I also like to read about topics that dont have to do with COVID and I know that is probably hard with everyone talking about it. Try opening a nice book and really let your mind dive into the story. It might do you wonders
